FOURNIÉ Guillaume

Biography

  • Guillaume is a veterinarian and epidemiologist at INRAE, and an honorary member of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC, London, United Kingdom).
  • He graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the National Veterinary School of Alfort, France, in 2005.
  • He obtained an MSc in Ecology from the University Pierre and Marie Curie, Paris VI in 2006, and completed a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.
  • He started a PhD at the RVCollege in 2007, in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Imperial College. Upon receiving his PhD in 2011, he commenced a research fellowship at the RVC. He joined the INRAE in December 2022. He holds the Chair in health ecology and spatial epidemiology of emerging pathogens and vectors, and is based on the VetAgro Sup campus, near in Lyon.

Research

  • Guillaume’s main research interest is understanding the way in which livestock production systems shape the emergence, spread, and maintenance of animal and zoonotic diseases.
  • He has been involved in various projects focusing on a range of diseases, including avian influenza, peste des petits ruminants, African swine fever, foodborne diseases, and antimicrobial resistance, in a variety of geographical and cultural settings in Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. Currently, much of his work focuses on the impact of poultry production intensification on the transmission and evolutionary dynamics of zoonotic infectious agents, especially avian influenza viruses in South and Southeast Asia.
  • His expertise includes mathematical modelling of disease transmission, network analysis, risk assessment, as well as designing and implementing field surveys.
  • His research is interdisciplinary, involving collaborative work and the development of integrative approaches at the interface between epidemiology, virology and social sciences.
  • Guillaume has also a strong interest in the translation of science into policy, and has served as an expert in veterinary epidemiology and animal health for several national and multilateral organizations.

Teaching

  • Guillaume teaches epidemiology, mathematical modelling, and network analysis within the Master One Health: Managing Health of Populations (Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, VetAgro-Sup).
  • He has also taught in other postgraduate teaching programs in France and abroad, and developed and led workshops and summer schools in network analysis and modelling.
  • He is a co-developer of epidemix (www.epidemix.app), an online application for teaching mathematical modelling.
